Thoughts on the Erne trade?

Thoughts on the Erne trade?

I think it was a good deal for everybody involved. Tampa just has the one RFA to focus on signing now, and they would have had to make a trade at some point anyway if they’d decided to keep him. They’re right around that 50 contract limit, so they would have had to move somebody out to get both him and Point signed. They’ve got some solid guys in the minors who can compete to fill his spot on the 4th line, so they solved a couple issues in one shot by just trading him for a pick.

For Detroit, they add a former 2nd-round pick who maybe didn’t pan out like people were hoping, but who played pretty well in a limited role last season. He put up 20 points in 65 games playing 10 minutes a night on Tampa’s 4th line. He’s going to have every opportunity to play more than that with Detroit, where a top-9 role is definitely in reach, and where he’s back with the GM who originally drafted him. There’s room for advancement with the Red Wings that wasn’t likely in Tampa with how their roster is structured. So he goes to a situation where he can play more, and potentially earn more in the future, which hopefully makes it easier for Detroit to get him signed to a contract fairly quickly.
